Drunk Driver Crashed His SUV With His Grandkids Inside: Cops

The 65-year-old Long Island man faces numerous felony charges.

PATCHOGUE, NY – A 65-year-old man was arrested after he crashed his SUV in Patchogue Friday afternoon, Suffolk Police said.

According to police, Daniel Mitchell was driving 2005 Ford Expedition on East Lakewood Street in Patchogue when his vehicle struck the rear of a 2010 Nissan that was stopped at a stop sign at 3 p.m. Mitchell’s grandchildren, an 11-year-old boy and a 9-year-old boy, were in the vehicle. No one was injured.

Mitchell was charged with DWI, a felony for having a previous conviction, first degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without an interlock device, two Counts of aggravated DWI with a child passenger 15 years or younger (Leandra’s Law) and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Mitchell was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Saturday. He is being held in jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
