LI Superintendent To Teachers: You Are More Than A Score

"I DO NOT CARE what your state growth score is...you have my permission to throw it out, or use it for any creative ways you may think of."

In what has become an annual tradition, Patchogue-Medford Superintendent Michael J. Hynes ripped into state growth scores in letter to teachers and principals in his district.

In the letter, Hynes, a frequent critic of what he calls "invalid and unreliable state assessments," tells his staff: I DO NOT CARE what your state growth score is. Let me be clear...I DO NOT CARE. It does not define you. You are more than a score."

State growth scores are based on how much students are growing academically in mathematics and ELA (as measured by state tests) compared to similar students statewide.
