Detectives Probe Report Of Swimmer In Distress Off Long Island Beach: Police
UPDATE: A thorough search by water and air was conducted, Suffolk police said.
UPDATE: Suffolk police say detectives are investigating a report of a swimmer in distress off the coast of Smith Point.
Detectives were called to Smith Point County Park in Shirley after a man reported seeing a swimmer in distress in the water at around 1:45 p.m.
The police department's Marine Bureau and Aviation Section responded "and conducted a thorough search of the area Tuesday afternoon," police said, adding that "patrols will continue in the area."

There have not been any additional reports of a swimmer in distress in the area and no missing person reports had not been filed as of 5 p.m., a police spokesman said.
The investigation is ongoing, according to police.

SHIRLEY, NY — A water search was underway Tuesday afternoon for a swimmer who went missing off of Smith Point County Park in Shirley, Suffolk police said.
The agency was notified that the swimmer went missing just before 2 p.m., according to police. We Call came in at 1:47 p.m.
Suffolk's marine bureau and aviation unit have responded to the beach.
