Pearl River Public Library recently began recruiting community leaders to participate in a new Read Campaign.
The library is gathering pictures of civic, school and government leaders which are being made into posters with the word "Read" across the top. The posters will fill the library's art exhibit space in November during the celebration of its 50th anniversary at the current location on Franklin Avenue. "In the next few weeks, we will be looking to invite everybody in to get their pictures taken," Pearl River Public Library Director Kathy Rose said. "My hope is we get as many people as possible. It is all about promoting reading and it is going to be a lot of fun."
The library began holding photo sessions when those interested in participating can have their pictures taken for the campaign Monday and has more scheduled at the following times:
- Sunday, Sept. 29 from 1 p.m to 5 p.m.
- Monday, Sept. 30 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Thursday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The posters are just part of the celebration of 50 years on Franklin Avenue. Pearl River Library will hold an open house Saturday, Nov. 3 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m,, fifty years to the day after the location was dedicated..
"We can't let that go by and not have an open house," Rose said. "We have planned a variety of activities focusing on your library then and now. We are going through old photos from the archives."
The open house will begin with a re-dedication of the garden space in front of the library, which includes a newly re-set marker in the name of Heinz Ahlmeyer, Jr. The Solid Rock Band, which plays music from the 1960s and features librarian Adraine Fabio, will play at 3 p.m. Rose said they are also planning a Hula Hoop contest. The Hula Hoop was trademarked in 1963, the same year the library moved from Ridge Ave. to Franklin Ave.
There will also be a discussion panel with Jim Cassetta and Art Aldridge, though the full list of panelists is not complete.
