Buchanan-Verplanck School Takes Part in Walk to School Day

Montrose, NY- A half dozen students and parents from the Buchanan Verplanck Elementary School took part in “National Walk to School Day” this morning. 

B-V became involved in the national event after a parent, Mr. Bill Caffrey, emailed Principal Josh Cohen about a “walking school bus.” According to Cohen, “The idea was to have kids be more active and healthy. With October 3rd as International Walking School Bus Day, we decided to start an annual tradition at B-V.”

Families from the B-V community coordinated locations where they could meet (Steamboat Dock, Buchanan Circle, etc.) and walk to school together. Along the way, students and families were excited to meet teachers Lori Ann Perrelle, Jen LeFevre, Terri Outhouse and Principal Cohen.

According to www.walkbiketoschool.org, National Walk to School Day is organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America and was designed to encourage the creation and need for walkable communities in the United States. Starting in 1997, Walk To School day has grown in size and popularity, crossing over US borders in 2000 to include both Canada and the United Kingdom.

"The kids were full of energy and loved their walk to school.  Their minds woke up along the way as they discovered slugs, worms, and creeks,” commented parent and event organizer Bill Caffrey. “It reminded me of the saying, ‘An active body leads to an active mind'.”
