Brush Fire Near Camp Smith; County Provides 'Bambi Bucket'

County "bambi bucket" called in to put out brush fire near Camp Smith.

A brush fire on or near the Camp Smith property broke out late this afternoon, according to Westchester County public information officer Kieran O’Leary. A Westchester County helicopter with a bambi bucket, a feature that allows the helicopter to pick up about 200 gallons of water from the Hudson River and fly it back to the fire, is working on the scene. The helicopter has been flying back and forth collecting and then dumping water on the fire for about two hours, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. O’Leary said. The helicopter is still responding to the fire as of 6:15 p.m. It also includes an infrared camera that can scope out hot spots.

The Continental Village Fire Department responded to the fire along with the County aviation unit. As far as O’Leary knows there have been no injuries.
