DEC To Hold Virtual Session About Cleanup Of Peekskill Plant Site

PEEKSKILL, NY — The state Department of Environmental Conservation will hold a virtual public session to discuss the cleanup of a manufactured gas plant site in Peekskill.

The DEC said action is about to begin that will mitigate contamination related to the Pemart Avenue MGP site at 189-199 North Water St. in Peekskill.

Cleanup activities will be performed by contractors working for Consolidated Edison Company of NY, which is the responsible party.

DEC officials said the remedial action is being completed in two phase. Phase 1 was completed in April and addressed contamination in upland areas.

Phase 2 will address contamination in Peekskill Bay. Preliminary site activities are expected to be finished in December to prepare for the cleanup to begin in April.

Highlights of the upcoming cleanup activities include construction of a barrier wall to prevent contaminant migration, dredging of about 10,000 cubic years of MGP impacted sediment and placement of clean backfill meeting criteria for use in the river.
