Gas Smell Causes Officials to Evacuate Hen Hud High School

The building was deemed safe after Montrose firefighters and workers from Central Hudson did a complete check of the building Thursday morning.

Hendrick Hudson High School had to be evacuated earlier this morning after officials thought a reported smell of methane might have been a gas leak.

Firefighters reported to the scene shortly after 9 a.m. after they received a report of possible gas leak at the high school. Scott Gilbert, assistant chief of the Montrose Fire Department, said the building was evacuated prior to the arrival of firefighters.

It took firefighters and workers from Consolidated Hudson about an hour to do a sweep of the building and determine there wasn't a gas leak.

Gilbert said the building was reopened after it was checked.

"The building was evacuated just as a precaution," Gilbert said.
