Grammy award winning trumpet stylist Shunzo Ohno—a Japanese native who has overcome life-threatening throat cancer and serious injuries sustained in a car crash—is performing at The BeanRunner Cafe in Peekskill this weekend.
Ohno lives in Briarcliff resident, and his children attend Chappaqua schools. He has toured all over the world but his Westchester performances are a bit of a rarity.
The subject of a biography, a documentary and a primetime Japanese television feature, Ohno has worked as a composer and arranger, and has conducted seminars. He also wrote and performed for the Children’s Rights Organization, TreShawn.
"He rallied his Grammy-award winning colleagues, John Patitucci, Clarence Penn and more for the benefit concert, 'Japan's Recovery with Hope and Courage,'" his biography states. "This concert received special recognition from the Ambassador of Japan. Shunzo continued efforts to generate hope by returning to Japan's hardest hit communities..."
Saturday's event goes from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is $10. The cafe is located at 201 South Division Street in Peekskill.
