Indian Point’s Unit 2 Shut Down for Planned Refueling

From Indian Point Energy Center: Control room operators at the Indian Point Energy Center shut down the unit 2 nuclear power plant for its 20th scheduled refueling outage at 12:01 a.m. on Monday.

Entergy will add about 900 contractors at Indian Point to work on maintenance and refueling activities during the shutdown. About 1,100 people are employed at the plant year round.

“Unit 2 continues to demonstrate it is a safe and vital source of electricity for New York, generating power more than 94 percent of the time since its last refueling,” said John Ventosa, vice president and top Entergy official at Indian Point. “Workers will perform hundreds of maintenance activities and inspections over the next few weeks to help ensure safe operation of the plant for years to come.”

Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity for homes, businesses and public facilities primarily in New York City and Westchester County.
