NY National Guard Soldiers Leave Camp Smith Today for Training

Soliders will head to Camp Shelby, Miss. for training before leaving for Kuwait later this year.

CORTLANDT MANOR, NY—About three-dozen members of the New York Army National Guard are scheduled to leave the Camp Smith training site in Cortlandt Manor today for additional training in Camp Shelby, Miss.

Most of the 35 soldiers who are being deployed are assigned to the New York City–based 369th Sustainment Brigade.

They will staff a Base Defense Operations Center in Kuwait after they complete their training, which is expected to last about a month. Their mission in Kuwait will be to coordinate security for American military facilities.

The soldiers are expected to serve in Kuwait for about 10 months before returning home. They are expected to serve a year's worth of  federal active duty time.
