After Stabbing, Police Charge Peekskill Man with Assault

A 29-year-old Peekskill man is facing misdemeanor and felony charges in connection with a stabbing, according to officials.

The incident, which left the victim in Westchester Medical Center with reportedly non-life-threatening injuries, occurred on the 500 block of South Street.

Peekskill Police Officer Fabian Gonzalez was responding to an unrelated call around 9:50 p.m. Thursday when a man who was lying on the ground—with a single stab wound in his back—flagged him down.

"It was learned that the stabbing victim had been in some type of a dispute with an acquaintance just minutes earlier at which time he was stabbed," authorities said in a statement.

Police arrested Byron Lazaro a short time later, on the 1,000 block of Cortlandt Street. He was charged with one count of felony second-degree assault and two counts of misdemeanor fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Lazaro was held pending arraignment.

Detectives Anthony Malfitano and Marcos Martinez, as well as Officer Matthew Basso, also responded to the incident.
