Troopers: Man, Pregnant Woman Get Lost Driving to Hospital; Deliver Baby on TSP
State troopers said a woman gave birth to a baby on the Taconic State Parkway after her driver got lost while trying to find Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow. They were eventually found in Putnam Valley.

State police Capt. Michael Jankowiak said every two or three years there may be incident where a trooper helps to deliver a baby on the side of the road.
There have even been a few babies delivered inside state police barracks.

But Jankowiak, a spokesman for Troop K, said the delivery that took place this morning along the Taconic State Parkway in Putnam Valley was one of a kind.
“I’ve never received a call like that,” said Jankowiak, who’s been with the state police for 23 years.

At about 3:22 a.m., police said they received a call from a man saying that he had woman in his car who had just given birth. The two had driven north from the Mamaroneck area, but had gotten lost on their way to Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow.
Police said the man continued driving, which made it difficult for troopers and emergency service personnel to find him.
Emergency officials were finally able to locate the car about 45 minutes, near Bryant Pond Road exit, by contacting the driver’s cell phone carrier and pinging the phone.
EMS workers transported the mother and child to the hospital for treatment.
Jankowiak said the identity and age of the man and woman was unavailable Wednesday afternoon.
