PELHAM, NY — Village Super Market, Inc, the corporation that began buying up Fairway markets in 2020 when the New York City-based grocery store chain declared bankruptcy, has now replaced the Hudson Valley's last Fairway with a Shoprite.

The company announced the plan July 6 and opened while renovating on Aug. 14.

Its other store in the region, in Nanuet, opened to fanfare in 2012 and closed in 2019, a victim of the national retail crisis being played out locally at the Shops at Nanuet and of the grocery company's continuing financial woes.

The new ShopRite, at 847 Pelham Parkway, will hold a grand opening in the fall.

Fairway's most famous location, under the West Side Highway, was bought in late 2021 by Columbia University in a $84 million deal for the 2.5-acre site, which included the former market building, a 13,000-square-foot warehouse, and a 68,000-square-foot parking lot — not to mention the former Fairway billboard that had long advertised to highway drivers.
