Holy Trinity Holds First “Volley for Life” Event

Respect Life Club raises more than $300 for the Long Island Life Center.

An idea sparked by Holy Trinity’s “Volley for Life” turning into a rousing success that managed to raise more than $300 for the Long Island Life Center recently.

The idea was sparked by seniors Christopher Martin of Bellmore and Sarah Fagan of Hicksville.

Four-player teams would compete in a volleyball competition, with an entry fee of $20 per team. The competition was held on a Friday afternoon and when the event was announced, the club really didn’t know how many teams were going to sign up.

As the day of the event approached, it was obvious it was going to be success.  Teams were registering up until 30 minutes before the competition was to begin and, in the end, 17 teams signed up to “Volley for Life” and play some friendly, competitive volleyball.

The teams went all out for this event with coordinating shirts that they designed, face paint and very creative team names such as “Santa’s Spikers”, “The Volley Llamas” and “The God Squad.”

Not only did the players have a great afternoon of friendly ‘volley’, the spectators enjoyed themselves as well, filling the gym and cheering their friends on.

Mrs. Sue Coffey, a member of the school’s Campus Ministry, reflected on the event, “It was a great opportunity for students to come together in fun and at the same time, raise awareness and money for the Long Island Life Center.”

The Long Island Life Center has served Long Island since 1986.  Started by a small group of dedicated individuals who realized the necessity to “help pregnant women in need, today, it has grown to a pregnancy resource center serving over 250 women each month and assisting 750-1000 a month over the telephone.”  The Long Island Life Center has locations in Deer Park, Massapequa and Hempstead.
