LI Coronavirus Heroes: A PT Cares For Vulnerable Young Patients

Today's hero is a physical therapist helping pediatric patients cope with no visitors during the pandemic.

PLAINVIEW, NY — As Long Islanders practice social distancing and make personal sacrifices as part of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, many look to those on the front lines as inspiration. Patch will be highlighting Long Islanders who are going above and beyond in their work and community to help during the COVID-19 health crisis.

Robbin Sigman of Plainview wanted her daughter Ashley Sigman to be recognized for her dedication to her patients: medically fragile newborns in the hospital. Sigman says she has been working at St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, Queens for eight years as physical therapist.

"Not only is she a dedicated physical therapist, but she is a sympathetic coworker who helps boost the moral of the physical therapists, occupational and speech therapists," Robbin Sigman says

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, patients are not allowed visitors. Ashley Sigman makes sure to spend time cheering up her youngest patients.

"Their faces light up when they see her walk in their rooms," Robbin Sigman told Patch.
