Plainview Schools Respond To Coronavirus Outbreak

PLAINVIEW, NY — The Plainview Superintendent is reminding parents of measures to take regarding COVID-19, known as the coronavirus, in a Feb. 27 letter to parents and guardians on the school website.

Superintendent Lorna Lewis said that the district is installing additional hand sanitizers throughout buildings and undertaking extra cleaning measures. The letter also listed prevention practices mirroring those of the flu.

"We will continue to keep you updated as soon as more information is communicated to us. The health and safety of our community remains our highest priority and collectively we can work to ensure this goal," the letter says.

Eleven cases of the new coronavirus were confirmed in New York as the total number of cases in the United States topped 100 and the nationwide death toll climbed to nine, officials announced Wednesday.

Tensions over how to contain the coronavirus escalated this week in the United States as the death toll climbed, The Associated Press reported. Lawmakers expressed doubts about whether the government can ramp up testing to effectively mitigate the spread.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said current symptoms reported for people with COVID-19 include mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough and difficulty breathing.

The virus is spreading from person to person, and someone who is sick with the virus can spread the illness to others, medical officials said. There is currently no vaccine to prevent the new coronavirus. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus.

The CDC recommends preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, such as:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
• Stay home if sick
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue away

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using regular household cleaning spray or wipes.
