Patch: How did you get your first start in business?

I was a personal trainer in local gyms throughout my 4 years in college.  Training my clients before and after class fit perfectly into my schedule.  Although I worked full time in the marketing industry after graduation, I continued to work as a personal trainer and dream about the business I wanted to start.

Finally, I decided to make my fitness dream a full time career.  After listening to my clients making excuses as to why they couldn’t get to the gym, I decided I needed to bring the gym to them. So I started GYMGUYZ with one van and a dream. I packed up all the essential fitness equipment necessary for a customized and creative workout.  As # 1 in Home Personal Training, we bring the gym to you-how convenient is that!

Currently GYMGUYZ has 10 vans serving 18 territories with over 30 Certified GYMGUYZ coaches dedicated to helping their clients get into the best shape of their lives.   GYMGUYZ franchised in 2013, allowing us to provide exceptional service worldwide

Patch: How long have you lived here?

JY: I have lived on Long Island my entire life for 30 years.

Patch: How did your parents influence you as a business owner?

JY: My parents were hard workers and taught me the importance of a good education and having a successful career.  When I started my business, my parents allowed me to convert their dining room into my office.  As the business grew so did the need for additional space.  In addition to the dining room, I slowly took over the basement and the garage in their home. Finally, it was time to move to an office building.  However, it was the patience and support from my parents, that guided me through the early years of GYMGUYZ, that I will never forget.

Patch: What's your favorite thing about living here?

JY: I enjoy being able to buying farm fresh produce from our local Long Island farms. Living a healthy lifestyle is what we are all about.

Patch: What's a business mistake you've made that later you were glad you did?

JY: Working in the business, not on the business.

Patch: What's the best business advice you've ever received?

JY: Do not to be afraid to take risks.

Patch: What advice would you give to a small business owner just starting out?

JY: Make sure it is a business you will enjoy doing every day.

Patch: What do you look for when you hire?

JY: I look for someone that knows and understands the GYMGUYZ business model. They need to have the passion and dedication that I have.  I want to see myself in that person.
