WATCH: Plainview Sirens Blare To Support Health Care Workers

The Plainview Volunteer Fire Department joined other departments across the island in blaring sirens to support health care workers.

PLAINVIEW, NY — The Plainview Volunteer Fire Department sounded sirens and air horns Sunday evening to honor health care workers on the front lines of the new coronavirus outbreak, which has led to the deaths of 162 people in Nassau County and over 4,000 across New York.

Plainview firefighters joined departments across Long Island in showing support for doctors, nurses and other medical professionals in blaring its sirens and horns around 7 p.m. Sunday.

"We hope you will join us by cheering, applauding and shouting your gratitude from the front door of your homes," the department wrote in a Facebook post before the symbolic gesture. "Let’s show these dedicated professionals how much their ongoing efforts are appreciated in this national battle against COVID-19. Stay safe, stay home and stay healthy."

The new virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, has sickened more than 1.2 million worldwide and caused over 70,000 deaths as of Monday morning. In the United States, about 338,000 were infected and over 9,600 had died.

On Sunday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said downstate New York could be at or very near the apex of its new coronavirus outbreak.

"The apex could be a plateau and we could be on the plateau right now," he said. "The next few days will tell.

Evidence that the outbreak may have peaked: the number of people released from the hospital has been rising, and in particular the total number of new hospitalizations is much lower. ICU admissions were also down. But it will take more than a couple of days of numbers to accurately depict a trend, he said.
