The amount of work it takes to create a pop-up book is eclipsed only by the magic it contains when we flip the pages. Hard work, however, has not deterred Briarcliff Middle School eighth graders, who recently spent hours creating pop-up books of their own.

As part of an interdisciplinary project, students in Kristen Samet’s ELA and Jodi Shearer’s science classes worked to create pop-up books complete with both artwork and stories.

Students began by reading choice books of different genres and then writing an original story in the same literary style as their novel. They used the novel they read as a model to craft their story.

The students then came up with designs for the pop-up art that would illustrate their stories. They researched pop-ups in science class and watched videos on how to make the pop-ups as part of their physics unit. They experimented with prototypes of different mechanisms and designs before using card stock to create their final product.

Finally, they bound their books by gluing, stapling and folding them together.

“This project was very hands-on and helped students learn and understand the physics behind pop-up books,” Ms. Samet said. “It was a great success and the students really enjoyed making their books.”
