Nicole Hesari, a third-grade teacher at Todd Elementary, has a small statue on her classroom bookshelf inscribed with “World’s Best Teacher.” This memento, given to her by a student, seems fitting given her recent recognition. Last week, during the district's Superintendent Conference Day, Superintendent Dr. Jim Kaishian honored her with the Briarcliff Teacher of the Year Award.

With 11 years of teaching experience, Ms. Hesari was genuinely surprised by the accolade. “I was deeply flattered and honored,” she remarked. “However, I believe there are many exceptional teachers in our district who work tirelessly and also deserve recognition.”
In our conversation, Ms. Hesari shared her insights on what constitutes a good teacher, her aspirations for her students' lasting memories from her class, and advice she would offer to new educators entering the profession.

Q: What are some important qualities for a teacher to have?
A: While having a structured and organized approach is beneficial, the ability to be flexible and open to new methods significantly contributes to being a teacher. If you are a lifelong learner, you will make it very far in this career, it is always evolving. A willingness to embrace new ideas and adjust to changes is essential. The field of education is ever changing.
Q: What advice can you give to a new teacher?
From a recent book on social-emotional learning, I learned a valuable lesson: deeply getting to know your students can greatly enhance your connection with them. For example, I set a goal to learn ten personal details about each student by the end of October, such as their favorite color, hobbies, or even personal challenges like a sick pet. Establishing these personal connections is vital, as it fosters trust and enhances student engagement. While building these relationships takes time, the effort is worthwhile as it lays a solid foundation for a meaningful teacher-student relationship.
Q: What do you hope your students take with them at the end of the year?
What I want most is for my students to leave with a strong sense of belonging. I hope they can look back and remember how much they were cared for and how we came together like a family. Having the best lessons or the most creative bulletin boards is nice, but what really matters is the feeling of community. When former students tell me that they remember being part of that, it’s the most meaningful thing for me.
Q: What is your favorite quote?
A: “Teaching is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s about nurturing the social and emotional well-being of students.” – unknown
It highlights that teaching goes beyond delivering facts or academic content. Instead, it stresses the importance of supporting students holistically, fostering their emotional growth, and creating a safe and supportive environment.
Students learn better when they feel emotionally secure and socially connected.
