Briarcliff 6th Grader Wins Earth Day Poster Contest

A contest sponsored by the New York State Senate has earned one Briarcliff Middle School sixth grader some recognition.

Sarah Raphael was announced the winner of the 2013 Earth Day Poster Contest for her artwork focusing on the three Rs of sustainability—reduce, reuse and recycle. She was one of six entrants from the school and among dozens representing the Senate's 40th district.

"Earth Day is a time to recognize the great strides New York has made in helping to improve our environment and preserve our most cherished natural resources,” said New York Senator Greg Ball (R,C,I — Patterson) in a statement. "I am so proud of Sarah for her great work and for her dedication and commitment to our environment. She is a testament to her parents and to the wonderful educators we have in our community who teach our children to be good stewards of the environment."

Raphael also received an award during the June 3 Briarcliff Manor Board of Education meeting, where BMS Principal Susan Howard sang her praises.

Howard noted the middle schooler "dives in with both feet" as she tackles new challenges and also "really goes out of her way to do nice things for other people as well."

Ball's office recognized Raphael as "a straight-A student who loves to learn" and a passionate dancer.

Said Howard, "She is a great student and a fine citizen and I am very proud to present her tonight for the board's recognition."
