Briarcliff Manor Purchases Ice Skating Rink

Briarcliff Manor residents will only have to go as far as Law Memorial Park this winter to enjoy a popular winter sport.

"We bought one of those ice skating rinks you can put up," Village Manager Philip Zegarelli announced at the holiday sing-a-long and community bonfire on Sunday. "It's only a few inches of water; so if it freezes, it will freeze pretty quickly and we'll have an ice skating rink over where the clay court is facing Pleasantville Road.

Zegarelli's announcement garnered applause and cheers from community members in attendance.

The "NiceRink" is a temporary structure that will replace the village's typical use of the park's pond for recreational ice skating. The tennis court (number 2)'s lighting already in place and will allow for nighttime skating.

"The new rink will measure 100’ x 52’ and feature 18” high plastic boards," according to the Recreation Department's brochure.

The department noted, "We anticipate scheduling hours for general recreational skating, setting aside specific time slots reserved for “pond hockey” play, and even offering the opportunity for residents to rent the rink for private skating parties."

The rink should be up and running as soon as the weather is cold enough, Zegarelli said and will run throughout the season on a trial basis.

"Hopefully, we'll put it up this week," he revealed. "Let's hope for a little colder temperature so you can all go out and ice skate."
