Obituary: Sean C. Ryan, Former Briarcliff High School Coach

Sean C. Ryan, age 72, of Skidaway Island, GA passed away Friday September 8, 2023.

He was born in Port Chester, NY on March 2, 1951, son of the late John and Arlene Ryan. He grew up in Briarcliff Manor, NY.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Barr Ryan, and daughter Erin and son Christopher. He is also survived by four of his siblings: Evin (Debby), Stephen (Lisa), Margy (Dennis) McLynn, David (Kathleen) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Joanne Ryan Mastromonaco.

Sean graduated from Lehigh University in 1973 and went on to a successful 30- year career at IBM retiring in 2004 as General Manager of the Retail & Distribution Sector, IBM Global Services. His career led to family moves from New York to Raleigh, NC, Bryn Mawr, PA and Armonk, NY.

Having been a top-notch runner at Briarcliff High School and Lehigh University, he was involved in the sport all his life. Once retired, he was the much-loved Cross Country and Track & Field Head Coach for Briarcliff High School for 10 years, for which his dedication to the team is honored to this day with “The Sean Ryan Award” at Briarcliff’s annual awards celebration.

Sean was all about his family and community. He could always be counted on to host the next family gathering or support local causes. He was the president of Armonk Friends of the Library, then president of the board of trustees for the North Castle Public Library and most recently the President of the Skidaway Island New Neighbors Association. Sean and Mary moved to Skidaway from Armonk, NY in September of 2020.

The wake was held Wednesday September 13 from 6 to 8 pm at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, GA. A Rite of Christian Burial Mass was held Thursday September 14 at St. James Catholic Church, 8412 Whitefield Ave, Savannah, GA 31406 at 10:00 AM.
