Playing Around With Winter Menus!

Pleasantville Farmers Market is open Saturdays, 9:30am - 12:00pm

Don't shy away from getting creative with your winter menu. The apparent constraint of cooking with seasonally available ingredients opens a door on how other individuals and cultures have approached the same opportunity. And of course, the opportunity has always been for a delicious meal.

Case in point, food journalist and author Mark Bittman's West African Peanut Soup with Chicken uses many items available now at the Pleasantville Farmers Market. Gajeski Produce and Maple View Farm can provide kale or collards, garlic, onions, and sweet potatoes. Maple View has summer sweet frozen tomatoes that can be used in this dish. Hilly Acres Farm or Woven Stars Farm have chicken (and the broth used in the dish can be sourced from Woven as well). Spice Revolution has cayenne, salt, and pepper. And with a jar of peanut or nut butter from The Peanut Principle -- you're set to produce a hearty, healthy and fun winter dish.

VENDOR HIGHLIGHTS

Both Noble Pies and Red Barn Bakery are now in every week with excellent sweet and savory baked items.

Gajeski Produce has two SALES this Saturday: garlic will be 2 heads for $3.00, and potatoes (usually $3.00/lb) will be offered at a dollar off / lb this Saturday.

3x3 Kitchen Provisions will be in with their Gluten Free items, including delicious biales.

Mead Orchards has plenty of apples and fresh apple cider. Their apples are kept in controlled atmosphere storage so varieties can stay crisp well into the spring.

Edgwick Farm is reporting that their first Firthcliffe are coming out of the bloomy cave at the farm.

This week Spice Revolution has excellent cayenne, salt and pepper for Mr. Bittman's recipe, but they also have perfect seasonings for fish, chicken, beans, lentils, stews, mushrooms, potatoes, pork, beef and root vegetables too. Stop by if you need some mid-winter menu inspiration.

Cooper's Daughter Spirits is highlighting their Black Walnut Bourbon. This bourbon is aged in their own American white oak barrels and finished in a second barrel that was used to store black walnut syrup tapped from trees at the distillery and surrounding groves. This rare nutty syrup creates an irresistibly smooth and slightly sweet bourbon.

Warm up while shopping. Enjoy a Knot of This World Pretzel from their grill, a hot waffle from Pika's farm Table, or a hot cup of tea or coffee from Teagevity.

Hilly Acres Farm offers a variety of pork, beef, chicken and fresh brown eggs every week. This week they're calling attention to their smoked chorizo, andouille, and kielbasa -- just defrost and serve. They're also having a special on half chickens and beef short ribs this week.

Troota Foods has been developing a line of fully vegan pasta items that are both TASTY and informed by their years of cooking up Italian deliciousness. Stop by to learn more about these new products.

Hudson Valley Duck Farm brings to market rendered duck fat. With a higher smoke point, and a rich complex flavor, duck fat is considered essential in many cuisines. Hudson Valley Duck offers a 16 oz. container and a new 7 oz. one. Here's an older article on this topic.

Will Himalayan Delish set up to produce dumplings to eat at the Market Saturday? It looks like YES, but note that on bad weather days shoppers can still obtain their dumplings, frozen-to-go, by stopping by the Orwasher's tent on poor weather days. Take home a bag of frozen dumplings and steam for 18 minutes to enjoy them as a meal this week (plenty of delicious sauces are included). Ideally, bring an insulated bag to tote your dumplings home.

Maple View Farm is in this week. Try preordering their "Farmer's Choice Bag" which offers a bulk discount on 7-9 items of seasonal produce selected for you from a variety of roots, greens, and herbs. To preorder use the link https://www.mapleviewfarmny.com/shop. between Tuesday, 7pm thru Thursday, 7pm.
