Pleasantville FD to Mark 17th Anniversary of Unsolved Murder

It has been 17 years since the brutal—and unsolved—murder of Pleasantville firefighter Thomas Dorr, but his fellow volunteers want authorities and the public to know "We still care."

"January 7th 1996 Tom Dorr was brutally beaten and stabbed to death on a cold and snowy night," according to a statement from the Pleasantville Fire Department. "His bloody body was found the next day by fellow volunteer firefighters concerned about his whereabouts."

The homicide was never solved and Pleasantville Fire Department Commissioner John Brooks said the department will continue to hold a vigil each year to keep Dorr's name in the news until his killer or killers are brought to justice.

"It is believed that at least one person is in the area still and we want to keep the pressure on hoping that someday someone grows a conscience and turns themselves in or gives someone up to the authorities," Brooks said.

Until that day, firefighters and friends of Dorr, remembered as "a gentle giant," gather each year to commemorate him at Graham Hills Park in Mount Pleasant.

This year's vigil will be held on Monday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
