Pleasantville Sends Off its 2013 PIA Ambassadors

The Village of Pleasantville presented 13 Pleasantville High School students with certificates and tokens of their home village at Monday's Board of Trustees meeting.

This year's Pleasantville International Association (PIA) ambassadors will be spending anywhere from four weeks to upward of two months abroad this summer in what Mayor Peter Scherer described as "an extremely diverse list of countries."

While abroad, the students generally take part in community service-type projects, home stays and general immersion in the cultures.

He noted, "I just want to thank all of the students, but also all of the families, who have made this possible."

The countries students will be heading to this year include: Japan, Thailand, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Peru, Morocco, Tanzania, China, Australia, the Najavo Nation, South Africa, South Korea and Mongolia.

Scherer, who added his own daughter took part in the program as a PHS student, told the families, "The payoff is extraordinary."
