Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: Black History Month Event Helpers

Every week, Patch will spotlight volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley. This will be a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

This week we are putting the spotlight on some opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

Canned Food Drive
United Way of Westchester and Putnam is hosting its second annual community canned food drive in honor of National Canned Food Month, which is observed in the United States every February. In order to raise awareness about canned food benefits—such as affordability, convenience, and nutritional value—United Way of Westchester and Putnam is collecting and donating canned foods to local pantries in Westchester and Putnam Counties.. Great for volunteers 16+ (or 13+ as part of an adult's team).
Date: 2/1-2/22; flexible schedule

Black History Month Event Volunteers
The Westchester Martin Luther King, Jr. Institute for Nonviolence is seeking volunteers to help make its Black History Month program, "Forgotten Roots: African American Muslims in Early America," a success! This event is hosted in partnership with the American Muslim Women's Association. Volunteers can greet guests, provide event information, and hand out flyers and event materials. Volunteers must be 20+.
Date: 2/7-2/9 from 12-8 p.m.; multiple opportunities

41st Annual Rockland Read-In
Spring Valley High School is looking for volunteers with a love of books to read to students during the 41st Annual Rockland Read-In! Volunteers are invited to contribute 25-30 minutes of their time to read an excerpt from a book that they have personally selected, as well as speak with students about themselves—their career, interests, passions, and their personal experience with reading. A teacher will supervise the class during the reading. This is a perfect opportunity for college graduates and seniors, as well as volunteers who are fluent in Spanish and other languages.
Date: 2/14 from 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m.; registration ends 2/12

Mock Interview Mentors for High School Students
Junior Achievement of New York inspires and prepares young people to be successful in a global economy. It is seeking Volunteer Mentors to help conduct mock interviews with high school students in Yonkers and serve as positive role models while students gain the skills and knowledge to be successful in job interviews. Training, materials, and support will be provided by Junior Achievement. Sessions take place during the school day.
