Fire Marshal: Faulty Cable Caused Belle Terre Garage Fire

No injuries were reported in the blaze.

After a Wednesday night fire engulfed a Belle Terre garage in flames, requiring mutual aid from surrounding fire departments, town officials said Friday that the fire was likely caused by a faulty wire in the home.

Town spokesman Jack Krieger said on Friday, "The investigating marshals determined the cause of the fire to be apparently accidental in nature due to an electrical failure in the service entrance cable between the meter pan and circuit breaker panel."

About 25 firefighters from Port Jefferson, Terryville and Mt. Sinai Fire Departments were called to the scene of the fire, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m. The fire was extinguished in about 35 minutes.
