Hit-And-Run Driver Mows Down Man in Wheelchair

BREAKING: A 48-year-old man was thrown from his wheelchair and police are on the hunt for the driver who fled the scene.

CORAM, NY – A man in a wheelchair was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Long Island Friday evening.

According to Suffolk Police, a 48-year-old man in a wheelchair was traveling southbound in the northbound bicycle lane of Mount Sinai-Coram Road, near Grady Lane, in Coram when he was struck by a gray Jeep or SUV traveling northbound on Mount Sinai-Coram Road at about 5:35 p.m.

The man was thrown from the wheelchair and sustained injuries to his head and neck. The vehicle fled the scene, continuing northbound on Mount Sinai-Coram Road.

The victim, who police did not name, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle that fled is described as a gray Jeep or SUV with oversized wheels. The vehicle may have sustained damage on the passenger side. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Sixth Precinct at 631-854-8600 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
