LI Man Choked, Beat Roommate With Mop, Then Urinated On Him In Fatal Attack: DA
He was found smoking a cigar while the man lay unconscious outside their home, Suffolk prosecutors said.
RIVERSIDE, NY — A Port Jefferson Station man has been indicted in connection with a brutal attack on his roommate that included beating him with a mop bucket and then urinating on him as he lay unconscious before dying days later, Suffolk prosecutors said.
Shortly after noon on Aug. 4, Felix Martinez, 56, confronted Richard Shields, 56, in front of the house they shared on Jarvin Road, with video surveillance footage from a neighbor’s home showing the confrontation beginning while Shields was seated on a chair in front of the home, according to prosecutors.
Over 15 minutes, Martinez repeatedly punched, choked, and stomped on Shields, and then struck him on the head with a mop bucket, prosecutors said, adding that Martinez ended the attack by stripping Shields of his clothes and then urinating on him as he lay unconscious on the ground.

When Suffolk police arrived, they found Martinez in front of the house, smoking a cigar while Shields lay unconscious at his feet, and he was immediately placed under arrest, prosecutors said.
Shields was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was listed in critical condition, and five days later, on Aug. 9, he succumbed to his injuries, according to prosecutors.

Tierney said Shields “suffered brutal and deadly injuries” after Martinez attacked him.
“My office will continue to work hard to ensure appropriate justice as a result,” he said. “We will not allow individuals to carry out such acts of violence in Suffolk County without facing significant consequences.”
Martinez was arraigned on the indictment, including second-degree murder and attempted murder. He was remanded without bail or bond during the pendency of the case.
His next court date is Sept. 22, and faces up to 25 years to life in prison on the top count.
His attorney, Jeremy Schileppi of Commack, could not be reached for comment.
