James Beauton discussed and improvised with a variety of instruments this week.

A Stony Brook University instructor made an appearance this past week in the Port Jefferson School District, offering students a free course in percussion.
Speaking with a mix of middle and high schoolers, James Beauton discussed the instruments' history and improvised using the drum, snare drum, marimba and shekere, an African rattle. He also performed “Prim,” a piece composed for the snare drum by leading Icelandic composer Áskell Másson.
“High school was the time in which I was most influenced by music, so I feel like it’s only appropriate to talk about it with students this age,” said Beauton. “I like what I do, and I have the resources and the time, so it’s perfect.”
