Bard Opening 'Microcollege' At Brooklyn Public Library

Students can earn an associate in arts from classes taught at the library's Grand Army Plaza branch.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Bard College is opening a "microcollege" at the Brooklyn Public Library where students can earn an associate arts degree from classes held at the central branch.

The admissions process for January classes opens in November for the full-scholarship classes. Applicants who qualify for Pell grants will be given priority, according to Bard.

Bard launched its first Microcollege last August at The Care Center in Holyoke, Massachusetts, that serves low-income mothers.

"Bard Microcolleges bring full scholarship, high quality, liberal arts education to communities most often isolated from the university experience," the Bard Microcollege website says. "The strengths of the Microcolleges rest in alliances between institutions that are conventionally separate from one another but have overlapping missions, common purpose, and shared core values. These alliances dramatically reduce the cost of college."

The Brooklyn Public Library is hosting a couple of open houses for people who want to learn more about the program.
