PROSPECT PARK, BROOKLYN — There's a new mascot in town — Or rather, in the park.

The Prospect Park Alliance is asking Brooklyn's help to name a new chipmunk mascot that will become the furry face of its "Park Champion" campaign, an initiative meant to drum up resources to take care of Brooklyn's backyard.

"Prospect Park is home a thriving population of chipmunks, made possible by the continued health of the park ecosystem. What better mascot to encourage visitors to Be a Park Champion? " the organization wrote.

The Park Champion initiative aims to help wildlife like the park's chipmunk by having neighbors sign a Stewardship Pledge, learn how to care for the park and volunteer their time.

It comes after a tough few years for Brooklyn's backyard, which, like many of New York City's park grounds faced the financial strain of the coronavirus crisis while more New Yorkers than ever used the outdoor oasis.

In 2020, the organization lost $3.2 million in revenue from March through June, had to lay-off or furlough 20 staff members and hold off on hiring season staffers who care for the park in the spring and summer.
