QUEENS — New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams urged Mets owner Steven Cohen to rename Citi Field over climate change concerns.

Citi Bank currently has the naming rights of the stadium with the Mets. Williams said that Cohen should consider terminating the contract with Citi Banks because of the bank's support of fossil-fuel companies.

“New Yorkers know I’m bleeding blue and orange — the Mets represent an incredible spirit, history and institution and are of tremendous value to New Yorkers,” Williams said. “However, Citibank’s practices do not represent the values of the Mets or our city, and we must make better demands. If Citi refuses to end their toxic relationship with the fossil fuel industry, the Mets should end their partnership with Citi.”

Williams will make the request to Cohen at a press conference in City Hall Park on Tuesday. A mass of New Yorkers are expected to travel to Albany on Tuesday to demand the state's executive budget, due April 1, include climate-friendly measures.

The ask comes after people nationwide protested outside major banks last week, demanding financial institutions divest from fossil fuel companies.
