QUEENS, NY — Severe thunderstorms that forecasters initially thought could cause a tornado prompted New York City to go under a hazardous weather outlook Monday afternoon, wrecking havoc on regional airports.

Airlines canceled over 460 flights at New York City regional airports and delayed 875 others Monday as of 5 p.m., according to the data-tracking service Flight Aware.

LaGuardia Airport was hit the hardest by the delays and cancellations; over 200 flights are grounded at the Queens airport, with an additional 330-plus delayed, according to Flight Aware.

Disruptions are almost equally as bad at Newark International Airport, where 190 flights are canceled and over 280 are delayed.

About 70 flights are canceled at John F. Kennedy International Airport and an additional 250 flights are delayed.

The entire city is expected to be under severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m., with city officials and National Weather Service forecasters warning of large hail, flooding, strong winds and frequent lightning.
