'Heartbreaking': Community Wraps Arms Around LI Family Whose Son, 16, Died In Tragic Crash
The family of Ostin Portillo Perdomo needs help to lay their beloved boy to rest.
CALVERTON, NY — The community is mourning a 16-year-old boy, Ostin Portillo Perdomo, who died in a Calverton crash Saturday night.
Riverhead High School Principal Sean O'Hara sent a letter out to families: "It is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that one of our students, Ostin Portillo, passed away this past weekend. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Ostin’s family and friends during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers remain with them."
He added: "A young person’s passing is always tragic, and a sudden loss like this can have a profound effect on the entire school community."

The district, he said, has implemented a crisis intervention plan, and psychologists, social workers, and guidance counselors have been and will continue to be available for grief counseling.
"If any students are in need of support processing this unexpected and tragic loss, please reach out. We are here to help," O'Hara said.

A GoFundMe has also been created by Ostin's mother Sofia Portillo to help with funeral expenses: "Hello, God bless you. We are raising funds for the remains of my son Ostin, who died on Saturday, September 27, in a tragic accident. We ask for your help."
According to Riverhead Town police, the crash took place at 9:22 p.m. on Sound Avenue, when the car, a maroon Honda Civic traveling east near Horton Avenue, struck a tree, police said. Ostin was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased, police said.
The Riverhead Police Department's detective squad, with assistance from the New York State Police Department's accident reconstruction team, is continuing the investigation, police said.
