In Season: Asparagus, Spinach & More

It's that time of year: activity at local farm stands is starting to pick up.

It's about that time if year when locals - and tourists alike - are seeing activity start to pick up at the roadside farm stands.

Early in the season, so far greens such as spinach, asparagus, and leeks were on sale Wednesday at Bayview Farm Market. Asparagus signs can be seen at most farm stands - usually $4 for a batch - and sorrel, an herb, is selling at Skelly's in Aquebogue.

Schmitt's Farmstand on Sound Avenue is limiting its hours at the early stage in the season from Thursday through the weekend, offering horse radish tastings when open.

Charlotte Liebert of Bay View said horse radish is running thin and rhubarb and leeks are in as well.

Looking forward to the end of the month, when strawberries are due in next, she said Wednesday's rain was much needed.
