Pedestrian Seriously Injured In Riverhead Crash On County Road 58 Thursday Night: Police

The driver remained at the scene and no charges were filed; the investigation is ongoing, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead pedestrian was seriously injured in a crash Thursday night, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, the crash took place at about 7:30 p.m. on County Road 58 at Carls Place. Upon arrival, patrol officers found that a 2000 BMW sedan had struck a pedestrian in the roadway, police said.

The driver, a man, 20, from Ridge, remained at the scene, police said.

The pedestrian, Jose Ricardo Culajay Avila, 27, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center with serious injuries, police said.

The Riverhead Police Department's detective division and the New York State Police Department's accident reconstruction unit responded for further investigation, police said.

At this time, the crash appears to be non-criminal in nature; however, the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
