9 Riverhead Teams Honored With Prestigious Scholar-Athlete Award

RIVERHEAD, NY — Riverhead High School’s fall sports teams were feted recently at a Board of Education meeting for their exceptional academic performances, as recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

A total of 121 Riverhead student-athletes received the Fall 2025 to 2026 NYSPHSAA Individual Scholar-Athlete Award, and nine of the district’s 10 fall varsity teams received the Team Scholar-Athlete Award, the district said.

"We congratulate all of the recognized students on their outstanding accomplishments. It is our greatest privilege to support their growth and success in all facets of life, helping them reach their full potential in the classrooms and engaging them with their passions on the field, court, track, and green."

The Individual Scholar-Athlete Award is awarded to student-athletes possessing a 90+ weighted GPA. The Team Scholar-Athlete Award is earned when at least 75 percent of a team’s total roster has a combined 90+ weighted GPA average. Seven of Riverhead’s teams possessed a 75 percent team roster GPA average of 100+, the district said.

The girls tennis team possessed the highest team average, with a 75 percent team roster average of 105 and a 100 percent team roster average of 103, the district said. In addition, all 14 members of the team earned the Individual Scholar-Athlete Award.

The boys cross country, girls cross country, game-day cheerleading, field hockey, football, boys golf, girls soccer, and volleyball teams all earned the Team Scholar-Athlete Award, as well, district officials said.

Four boys soccer players also received the Individual Scholar-Athlete Award.

The 75 percent team roster averages, 100 percent team roster averages, and number of student-athletes for each of the Team Scholar-Athlete Award teams are below, listed in alphabetical order by sport:
