Here are the top stories today in Riverhead:
- Last year, Riverhead was victorious over Smithtown in 'Battle of the Towns' wellness challenge for charity. The virtual fitness fundraiser runs through Saturday, April 16. Participation includes downloading and registering for the event through the Kilter mobile app, either log your exercise manually or by gym check in. Registration is $30 — with the additional cost covering an included T-shirt. Good luck Riverhead! (Greater Long Island)
- Shaunakaye Vazquez, age 39, of Selden, was driving on Boyle Road in Selden when her Chevrolet Tahoe struck a disabled Subaru resting on the shoulder of the road. The Subaru struck a car in front of it, pinning a pedestrian between both cars and injuring two other pedestrians. Vazquez fled the scene, but police located her shortly after. Vazquez was charged with DWI and for leaving the scene of an accident. (Daily Voice)
- A report created by BusPatrol America, the company that operates the school-bus-camera program, indicated that there were 85,608 school-bus-camera violations (failing to stop for school buses) from May - December 2021 for Suffolk alone. The eight-month violation period yielded roughly $12.1 million in revenue, Suffolk has received about $6.6 million of that, and about $77,000 went to East End municipalities that adjudicate their own violations. - The Shirley Strum Kenny Student Arts Festival is set to return live and in-person from April 12-27. The festival was created by the former president, Shirley Strum Kenny, in 1996 and offers SBU students the opportunity to showcase their creative work. (Stony Brook News)
