Fire at 2nd Luxury Rental Development in Yonkers

Officials said grand opening events at their other development in the neighborhood would not be affected.

A fire swept through a luxury rental apartment building under construction in Yonkers Thursday. The complex, called 1177@Greystone, was severely damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters were battling the blaze when a call came in about a residential fire. Aida Santiago, 54, was trapped in that blaze and died.

GDC Rentals, the developer, thanked the Yonkers Fire Department for keeping the construction-site blaze from spreading to neighboring buildings.

Here's the company's statement:

A major fire that was discovered today at about 10 a.m. caused extensive damage to 1177@Greystone, the 55-unit, 3-story luxury rental apartment building we have been constructing at 1177 Warburton Avenue. We are still assessing the damage and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
We are extremely fortunate that there was no loss of life or serious injuries. We are deeply appreciative of the efforts of the Yonkers Fire Department in battling the fire and keeping it from spreading to adjacent properties.
We are fully committed to the City and the neighborhood and will begin construction on the building again as soon as possible.
Construction on 1177@Greystone was approximately 70 percent complete with the first occupancies expected in the fall. Our preliminary estimate is that this incident will now push the buildings completion back to late spring 2018.
The fire comes just two days after the ribbon cutting ceremony of our River Tides at Greystone building, a 330-unit luxury rental building a short distance south of 1177@Greystone. The Grand Opening Weekend and Open Houses scheduled at River Tides this weekend will go on as planned.
