Rivertowns to Celebrate Passover Monday

This year, local Jews will celebrate the eight day festival of Passover from Monday night on March 25 to the evening of Tuesday, April 2.

Passover commemorates Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery from Egyptian control and is celebrated with a seder feast and rituals. The pharse passover comes from the story of God sending down ten plagues upon the Egyptians, the last which would take the lives of their firstborns. The Israelites were told to mark their doorposts of their homes with the blood of a spring lamb so they would be "passed over."

"If I had one message to share I would say that Passover is not about the past it is about the present," said Chabad's Director Rabbi Benjy Silverman.

"We live the ancient story because it is informs and gives direction throughtout our lives today. Primarily in the sense of freedom, being Passover is a story of freedom, one we obviously need to respect and protect the freedom of others and also in regards to ourselves that we can achieve our own personal freedom. We each have our personal struggles and that which hold us back. Passover reminds us we can overcome those struggles and limitations, whether external or internal, and gives us the courage to overcome them."
