Jan. 22/23: Scrapbooking Class at Hampton Inn, Second Annual Card-a-thon

It's the weekend, so now that you have off from work, kick back, put your feet up and let us tell you what's on deck for this Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday — If you have the urge to be creative but don't know what to do, head down to the on Merrick Road for a class on scrapbooking and card making. The day time scrapbooking session is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $22. The evening card-making session is from 5-8 p.m. and costs $27. Interested? Contact Michelle at 516-766-4015.

Saturday — Need a taste of culture? Milton Avery & The End of Modernism at the looks at work by the artist who brought the sketch, with its spontaneity, movement and fleetingness, to the status of a finished painting. The exhibition features Avery's intense saturated color fields, the simplification of form, and figures that emphasize the flatness of canvas surface. It costs between $4-$10 for admittance.

Sunday — Though we try to keep this RVC-centric here, this is an important event happening just next door in Oceanside. The Oceanside First United Methodist Church is hosting its , where hand made greeting cards are donated to the U.S military soldiers via Operation Write Home (previously known as Cards for Heroes) and operation Quiet Comfort. You don't need any card making experience to help out and there is no fee to volunteer. Call Michelle at 516-766-4015 to get involved.

Sunday — Let your child spread his creative literary wings at the Rockville Centre Public Library during its writer's workshop for kids in grades 7-12. The session is from 3-4 p.m. and those who attend are encouraged to create, share, and discuss their work.

Sunday — If you have a child with special needs, bring them down to the  from 2:30-4 p.m. for. This is one hour of free play for children with special needs and their siblings, and is sponsored by the Nassau-Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America.
