LI Lawmakers React As Trump Readies To Sign Signature 'Big, Beautiful Bill'
The House passed the legislation on Thursday.
WASHINGTON, DC — While House Republicans are celebrating a major win for President Donald Trump with the passing of his sweeping domestic policy legislation, Long Island Democrats are not on the same page.
Rep. Laura Gillen (NY-4) said the bill will "devastate Long Island."
According to Gillen's office, as many as 1.5 million New Yorkers could lose full or partial health care coverage.

Trump is expected to hold a signing for his so-called "Big, Beautiful Bill" on July 4.
"There is nothing beautiful about this bill. I voted no," Gillen said.

Plus, Gillen pointed to a dramatic cut to food assistance to the most vulnerable, "while saddling Nassau County with an additional $12.9 million in federally-mandated administrative costs, putting another tax burden on Long Islanders already facing a cost-of-living crisis."
Her colleague Rep. Tom Suozzi (NY-3) said on X: "Most Americans, regardless of their politics, still believe in a simple, fair concept: that if you work hard, you should be able to afford to buy a house, put food on the table, educate your kids, have health insurance, and retire one day without being scared."
However, Suozzi said passing the bill on Thursday "moves us in the opposite direction, making life more expensive, more uncertain, and further out of reach for middle-class families and those aspiring to the middle class."
Vice President J.D. Vance took to X to declare victory: "At times I even doubted we’d get it done by July 4! But now we’ve delivered big tax cuts and the resources necessary to secure the border. Promises made, promises kept!"
Gillen added the legislation "fails to repeal the restrictive SALT cap, which has forced my constituents to pay tens of thousands of dollars in unfair double taxation."
Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY 1) weighed in: "Raising the SALT cap was the toughest legislative fight of my time in Congress. This bill quadruples the SALT cap for five years, boosts the Child Tax Credit, eliminates taxes on tips and overtime, and delivers the biggest middle-class tax cut in decades."
Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY 2) said: “For nearly a decade, middle-class New Yorkers have borne the brunt of unfair double taxation. When Democrats had full control of Washington they failed to deliver a single dollar of SALT relief. After a hard-fought battle and months of negotiations, I’m proud to say that Republicans have quadrupled the SALT deduction cap to $40,000."
Additonally, Garbarino said, “the One Big Beautiful Bill will provide much needed tax relief, safeguard essential programs, and strengthen our national security.
Two Republicans, Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania voted alongside the Democrats in Friday's vote.
