Grapstein told The Wall Street Journal that the buyer, who has not been identified, rented the home for about $19,000 a month for the past year. Harrison told the newspaper that when the Riveras received another offer on the property, the tenant decide to purchase the property instead of moving out.

While the house custom-built in 2006 has a Rye address, it is located in the Harrison school district. The home has a turret on each side of the entrance, a wood-paneled room that was used as a sports bar, an office, billiards room, home theater, outdoor pool and basketball area, according to the listing agents.

The listing described the property as "a grand slam of exceptional style, expansive living spaces and resort-like grounds in the perfect Rye location."

The house was listed for $3.95 million which was much less than the $5.7 million the Riveras paid for it in 2006.

Besides being a star baseball player for 19 seasons with the Yankees, Rivera is a known presence in New Rochelle and around the Sound Shore and Westchester County with volunteer organizations.

The Riveras have since moved to a new home they had built to order in White Plains.
