MASTIC BEACH, NY — Eight different agencies responded to William Floyd High School Saturday night after a propane leak was discovered in the building, officials said.

The Mastic Fire Department was called to the scene at around 8:30 p.m., and discovered a roughly 1,800 gallon underground tank was "actively leaking" and firefighters began working with school district staff, Paraco Gas, and the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal's office to stop the flow of the gas.

The department, as well as firefighters from Mastic Beach, and Center Moriches, remained on the scene while the residual gas was burned off safely.

The scene was given the "all-clear signal" at around 3:30 a.m., the school district said in a Facebook post on Monday.

"Gas has been completely expelled from the tank, the valve has been repaired and all is safe," the post read. "The building recorded zero readings of gas so the building is also safe to enter."

No other buildings are affected, officials said.

It was noted that "the odorant" that fire officials used will likely cause a lingering smell and custodial and facilities staff are working hard to air the building out in time for school, officials said, adding that when the power was shut down, the network went offline including phone systems.

"We will continue to keep the community informed if anything changes regarding the high school schedule tomorrow," the post continued.

In addition to the Mastic, Mastic Beach, and Center Moriches fire departments, the Mastic and Mastic Beach ambulance companies, as well as Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency coordinators, and National Grid also responded to the scene, officials said.

Patch has reached out to the district for comment.
