Fifty-seven private and public wells will be tested just south of the airport in Mastic and Shirley, Newsday reported.

MASTIC, NY — Fifty-seven public and private wells, just south of Brookhaven Calabro Airport, will be tested throughout Mastic and Shirley for possible contamination by forever chemicals, Newsday reported.

Monitoring at wells in the area near the airport and Mastic Fire Department Station 1 found perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid that were above levels that are considered safe, health department officials told the outlet.

Officials plan to reach out to property owners to survey their wells for free, the outlet reported.
