Juneteenth Celebration Planned For Longwood Estate In Ridge On Saturday

It will include food, games, music, trivia contests, and other activities for children.

RIDGE, NY — Brookhaven Town will host its ninth annual Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration at Longwood Estate in Ridge on Saturday.

It will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event, which is sponsored by the Black History Commission, celebrates the 158th Anniversary of the end of slavery and will include food, games, music, trivia contests, and other activities for children.

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas with news the Civil War was over and the enslaved were free — two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

Slavery was not abolished until the ratification of the 13th Constitutional Amendment on Dec. 6, 1865.
