Here are the top four stories in Shirley-Mastic today:

1. Brookhaven Town will spread animal adoption awareness throughout the year. The town discussed a new plan in a board meeting to help pets to find their forever homes. Currently, 81 cats and 70 dogs live in the shelter, waiting for adoption. (Patch)
2. For those taking the New York State Regents examinations, tests will be administrated at William Floyd High School on Jan. 24-27. Visit here to access the information packet and other important details. (Patch)
3. The furry residents of the Brookhaven Animal Shelter need help! If you are up to volunteer at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library to make toys, bandanas, and other services to benefit the pets waiting for the adoption, visit the schedule of events. 4. The ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand-opening Satellite Branch of the MMSC Library is set for Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. Refreshments and snacks will be provided during the event. The new library is located at 369 Neighborhood Road in Mastic Beach. (Patch Events)

• A Lake Grove man has been arrested for approaching an 11-year-old-child while she was walking home from Selden Middle school. According to the police, the 28-year-old man made sexual comments while following her. Luckily, she managed to escape, but the suspect crashed into a pole when he tried to flee from the scene. (News 12 Hudson Valley)
• Did you know that people used to ski all winter on Long Island? The fun started in 1965 at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Back in the day, that hill was 344 feet tall.
